Diagnosis

If something or someone has led you to believe that you could be diagnosed with Asperger's, seek the opinion of a professional. This is because many other, sometimes simpler issues can mimic Asperger's. If you do have the diagnosis, an official diagnosis made by a professional can facilitate your getting the help you need.

However, if, like many people with AS, you have liimited resources, you can get more information about yourself by taking online tests and reading articles about AS to see if you really do meet the criteria for the diagnosis.

Are You a Match?

Professionals start by using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, a manual used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental health, personality and developmental conditions that may interfere with a person's functioning. More information about the DSM is available from the OFFICIAL DSM SITE A more accessible explanation of what the DSM is for is in a WIKI

Asperger's is listed in the DSM IV TR as a developmental disorder. There are some hubs on Asperger's and here is mine: Asperger's ABCs

You can start by taking the Autism Quotient Test to see if you match up with thid diagnosis.

The Autism Quotient test is offered in many languages. You can find it on the Autism Research Centre website. The adult test is designed for people age 16 and older. Note that these tests require a few steps, including downloading and using an answer key to score the test.

Take or help someone take the Adult Autism Test HERE

The adolescent version, for ages 12 to 15, is HERE

The test for children age 4 to 11 is HERE

There are automatically scored versions of the adult test online. There is one HERE

The adult test was made popular by an article published in WIRED magazine in 2001. You can find their test HERE

General Online Resources

These are links to information and support for people diagnosed with Asperger's. In the near future I will provide a link to state by state resources.

OASIS

Autism Resources: possibly comprehensive, well populated and researched site with hundreds of links to books, memos, websites and the like. Worth exploring, but takes some time to navigate. It is by the father of an autistic child. If you or someone you love is autistic, make sure you explore the page on related resources for links to disability rights and resources. Includes Celiac disease links, and one for Asperger's.

Legal Resources: on the Wright's Law website.

Parenting Page: by the mother of two autistic children.

Resources in Oregon, Idaho and Washington States

This is DANA'S site with a huge page of links to ADULT RESOURCES

Neurolands is a site with resources and links to education, forums and podcasts.

Autism Arts: Worldwide collection of artwork and music from children and adults with autism.

AAPC - Autism Asperger Publishing Company

Ads by and for Applied Behavior Analysis Therapists

Autism Information site

You can find social networking resources online HERE

As you know sites come and go on the internet. I have taken care to include only links that I personally checked to make sure that they:

1. Connect with useful information

2. Do not have as their primary purpose sales of books or services.

I will update when I can, and I hope this is helpful.

You give lots of information links and I will have to be back to read. Thank you so much for all the links too. Wonder if you have read my hub relating to transdermal nutrition creams for autism - Asperger's surely would benefit too, perhaps in less visible way?

Lots of people with autism (including me) might have an issue with creams - that whole sensory integration thing, you know? I have a friend who can't do creamy white anything, and I can't do oily.

The main nutrition issue for autism (proven by research) is avoiding gluten and casein. There are other things purported to work, but not as well researched.
